A parallel twin engine with 85 charging horses and 62 lb/feet of torque give it startling speed and breathtaking acceleration. Throw in a dry weight of just 392 lbs, six-speed gear box, switchable ABS, wide foot rests and a 4.2 gallon tank located under the seat for a low center of gravity, and you get a enduro light enough for amazing handling no matter where you’re headed. If you want all the capabilities of the GS in a lighter, tighter, totally aggressive package, the destined-to-be-a-classic F 800 GS is your ride.

Features & Highlights

  • Brakes

The braking duties are handled by two fully floating brake discs (300mm in diameter) clamped by double piston sliding callipers. The rear brake utilizes a 265mm single rotor with single piston sliding callipers.

  • Engine

The parallel twin familiar from the F 800 S/ST models forms the basis for the GS drive. For the new usage, however, some aspects of the engine have been modified. In order to allow longer spring travel with a wheel spacing that remains moderate, plus an ideal distribution of weight, the cylinders are now only angled forward by 8.3 degrees instead of the 30 degrees with the F 800 S/ST.

  • Frame

A new steel frame designed specifically for the GS model, is built as a tubular space frame and offers a range of improvements to enhance the already extraordinary off road capabilities of the F 800 GS. For example there is a slim steering head that allows a lock stop of 42 degrees for an improved turning radius on tight trails.

  • Headlight

For night time duties the F 800 GS features an asymmetrical double headlight with plastic cover in a new plastic housing. Two H7 bulbs handle the illumination. Another interesting feature is that when the high beams are turned on, the low beams also illuminate to provide maximum lighting.

    Is a BMW F 800 S a good first motorcycle for a girl?
    I turn 16 soon and my parents are happy to buy me a motorcycle (nothing too expensive though!) I’ve been doing some research and I know that I want a sport bike and something with some power but nothing that would be over-powering. I want something that looks good but I want something safe too. Any suggestions?

    if this is going to be your first bike… oh man… the doctors are gonna love you, and your parrents are going to regret the purchase.

    your best bet for a first bike, and one that you will most likely ride at a Motorcycle saftey course is the EX250 Kawasaki Ninja.

    the Motorcycle Saftey foundation Defines a Beginner’s bike as having less than 400cc. that is half of the bike you are looking at. there are other requirements as well but most bikes in this catagory fit one or both of the other criteria making them Ideal beginner’s bikes, and the EX250 is the only sport bike in the catagory in the US.

    for about 3,000 you can pick up one new. then you have insurance, for a 16 year old female, you are going to spend about $130+/- for full coverage a month on the ninja (EX250) so there is about 4,000 before you even buy your riding gear, and you void full coverage on a bike as a 1st year rider if you are not in full gear(at the very least they will require a helmet for a 1st year rider). then you have the Motorcycle safety course, you can ususally get away with paying less than $300, in some states they are free and bikes/gear are provided (class dependant on the gear). so that (for a new ninja) takes you close to or above the $5,000 mark for your first bike.

    you can save money by buying used, but never buy used riding gear or helmets, as a beginner, buy what you know you will need (the MS Course will help). and don’t skimp on insurance ether.

    You will drop the bike, and if you get a 600+cc bike you will start hearing “Squid” (Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Immenantly Dead) from a lot of veteran riders. and most beginners either don’t live from droping a 600+ bike, or never ride again, or the third option, they become Anti-bike war mongers and try to get them outlawed.

    Stay safe, make wise decisions, and keep the rubber side down, Shiny side up.

    Can the BMW F 800 ST be comfortable for someone with a 29″ inseam?
    I know they have a low seat option, but how well does it work?

    I think you are confusing “comfort” with the ability to touch the ground. My K75 (see avatar) is a bit to tall for me too, but I’ve found it easy to compensate by putting just my left foot down on stops (and leaving right foot on peg and holding rear brake on stops).
    Once you are on the pegs (rolling), then you can tell if you’ll be comfortable in that position. The lower seat might put your legs in a better position, BUT on a long trip you might be wishing the seat were better padded. Try the low and normal seat if you can, and ride the low seat as long as they’ll let ya to see if that seat starts feeling “bony”.
